In 2021, the Kloosterboer transshipment company (now acquired by Lineage), which specializes in temperature-controlled food products, encountered a quality problem with a specific product: the bananas did not meet the desired quality standards. As a result, destruction of the fruit was unfortunately unavoidable. This situation was particularly challenging because it involved a batch six times larger than usual. Milgro, Kloosterboer's existing waste management partner, took charge of handling this emergency situation.
Smart technology in containers
A product destruction often comes unexpectedly and is obviously more than annoying for the client. Fortunately, Kloosterboer found out about the condition of the bananas in time. Thanks to smart sensors in the containers, the condition of the bananas became clear during transport, allowing Kloosterboer to act quickly when the fruit arrived at the port. This saved a lot of time and money.
Processing bananas
Together with Kloosterboer, we sought the most sustainable solution for processing the bananas, fermenting much of the fruit and using the waste to produce biogas, a renewable energy source. Thanks to our independent position and large capacity of processors, we helped Kloosterboer handle this situation. By connecting with various parties and acting quickly, we achieved a great result.
