Royal FloraHolland towards zero waste

Royal FloraHolland, the largest flower auction in the world with branches in Aalsmeer, Naaldwijk, Rijnsburg and Eelde, has selected Milgro, market leader in independent waste and raw materials management, as its outsourcing partner for waste management. Since 1 September 2017, Milgro has full control of the internal waste flows and processes and the management of external waste service providers. In collaboration with Royal FloraHolland, Milgro is working on the realization of the zero waste ambition that Royal FloraHolland has formulated. Innovation aimed at further sustainability and lower costs come together in this.

Royal FloraHolland is close to nature. Together with its members and customers, the cooperative makes the world more beautiful and healthier with beautiful flowers and plants. From now on they also contribute by making the residual flows from the auction again of value. After all, in nature all waste materials have value again. “Responsible entrepreneurship by applying innovations is an important spearhead of Royal FloraHolland. The aim is to achieve a zero waste situation where there is no residual waste, ”says Piet Briët, CSR & Sustainability Manager at Royal FloraHolland. “In Milgro we have found a partner who ensures that we get more value from our raw materials, which we still call waste today. This ties in perfectly with our circular ambition. In the long run, instead of costing money, this waste will actually generate money. "

Best Value Procurement

The Royal FloraHolland waste management tender procedure was based on Best Value Procurement (BVP), which is based on purchasing and realizing the highest value for the lowest price. This method offers contractors optimal opportunities to show their expertise. After an intensive selection procedure, which was supervised on behalf of Royal FloraHolland by specialists from Royal HaskoningDHV, Milgro was selected as the best partner.

Laurens Groen, CEO of Milgro is proud of the award from Royal FloraHolland: “We have been able to substantiate the added value of our specialism well in the BVP process. By using our digital waste management system, we achieve a controlled process and conclusive data. We then use data and knowledge to steer towards continuous improvement of services and performance, optimization of recycling and reuse of raw materials. We derive more value from raw materials and the waste management costs of Royal FloraHolland and its customers will decrease. In short, we ensure profitable sustainability. ”
