What is the resource transition?

In July 2024, the cabinet announced that additional money will be made available for retraining and upskilling professionals for the energy and resource transition. This investment highlights the urgency and necessity of these changes. But what exactly does the resource transition entail? And why is it so important?

What is the resource transition?

Resource transition is about changing the way we use raw materials. Instead of consuming raw materials, the goal is to reuse materials. This ensures less waste and a more sustainable use of raw materials.

Looking beyond waste separation and recycling

Separating waste and recycling are well-known components of resource transition. By separating waste, materials can be reused, instead of being incinerated or landfilled. This saves resources and energy, and reduces harmful emissions. However, this approach is not enough to really accelerate the raw materials transition.

The challenge lies not only in improving recycling, but especially in preventing materials from becoming waste. This requires a new perspective on product design, logistics and collaboration within chains. By applying circular principles, raw materials stay in circulation longer and retain their value.

The important report of the SER (2022)

In 2022, the Social and Economic Council (SER) published the report "Without accelerating the raw materials transition, climate goals will not be met." This report emphasizes that the raw materials transition and the climate transition are closely linked. Without an accelerated raw materials transition, we will not achieve the climate goals.

A different perspective on the resource transition

At Milgro, we see waste as a raw material that has lost its way. The solution lies not in better recycling, but in preventing materials from becoming waste.

This requires a system change, looking not only at what happens to waste, but rather at how we can keep raw materials in the chain. The raw resource transition goes beyond separating waste: it is about a circular economy in which materials retain their value and waste is avoided. This means that products must be fully recycled or reused at the end of their useful life.

Milgro accelerates this transition with data, network and craftsmanship and helps companies manage raw materials sustainably and profitably.
