Milgro has a mission: to move Earth Overshoot Day to December 31, where it belongs. In fact, Earth Overshoot Day takes place earlier and earlier every year. An alarming development, which Milgro, together with you, would like to put a stop to. We explain why the raw material transition is of great importance for the viability of our earth.
What is Earth Overshoot Day?
Earth Overshoot Day is the day when we humans have consumed as many resources as the earth can give us in an entire year. In other words, the day when natural capital is completely consumed. By natural capital we mean our planet with all its resources. From forests to soil, from minerals to fossil fuels and everything in between.
The rate at which we reach this day each year is increasing at an alarming rate. For your image, in 1986, Earth Overshoot Day fell on December 31. In the year 2000, this day took place on November 1. After that, things are accelerating. 2020: Aug. 22, 2021: July 29, 2022: July 28 and this year August 2nd.
We live on one globe, but we consume as if we reside on 1.75 globes. As a result, the ongoing over-demanding of the planet leads to major problems, such as increasing shortages of resources, energy and food, as well as declining biodiversity. It is time for transition.
Earth Overshoot Day and the resource transition
The resource transition is part of a circular economy, in which we use raw materials consciously and effectively. By extending the life of raw materials, we preserve natural capital longer. This is why Earth Overshoot Day is directly linked to waste and raw materials.
We must continue to treat raw materials as capital and not let them become waste. Milgro supports organizations with insight and benchmarking to make improvements in waste, waste and resources.
What is Milgro doing with natural capital?
Humans are the stewards of the planet. Milgro's mission is to restore the balance between what the earth gives us and what we consume. We do this by professionalizing the management of natural capital for companies.
Managing natural capital: how does it work for businesses?
As a business, you deal with different types of capital: financial, human and natural. Just like reporting financial figures and HR statistics, natural capital should also be reported. Only when you have insight into consumed resources, you can better manage their sustainable use. Milgro helps make the consumption of your natural capital transparent with clear reports.
