CSRD reporting requirements: How can Milgro help your company with this?

The first CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) deadline for companies with more than 250 employees, a turnover of more than €40 million , or a balance sheet total of €20 million is approaching. Listed SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) will have to start providing insight into the topics covered by the CSRD in January 2025, before the deadline in 2026. In all likelihood, then, you are in the midst of making preparations, or are about to take up the challenge.

At Milgro, we understand that the legislation is complex , and that reporting on it takes a lot of time. In this blog, we tell you how Milgro can relieve your company of this burden.

How does Milgro help you with CSRD?

Milgro relieves your company of CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) burdens by providing full insight into your waste management. How do you know if you need to report on waste?

A dual materiality analysis helps determine whether you should report on your company's waste within the CSRD. This includes both the impact of waste on the environment, and the expectation of stakeholders. If waste plays a significant role within your operations or environmental impact, the analysis will reveal this and you will know if your waste management is a mandatory reporting topic under the CSRD.

The dual materiality analysis is developed using the following sustainability factors: ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) and is the first step in preparing for the CSRD. It can be found in our startkit. Want to know more? In our webinar we also share more information about this.

What waste figures should you report?

The reporting on waste within the CSRD can be found in Chapter E5: Resource Use & Circular Economy, which distinguishes between Product Design and Waste Treatment. The figures within the reporting include both quantitative and qualitative data. Below, we take you through what is important here.

Quantitative

  • An overview of all waste streams, with a breakdown between hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
  • Data on disposal (landfill, incineration) and recovery (recycling, reuse).

Qualitative

  • Risk inventory and policy transition plan focused on renewable materials.
  • KPIs and targets for waste management and waste reduction within the chain.

Additional reporting on waste separation, recycling rates and value chain impact will be required. It is also important to periodically report the progress of your waste policy, includes concrete waste reduction targets and measures. We list the following:

  • Waste segregation and recycling: Companies must provide insight into how much waste is separated and recycled, both internally and externally at processors.
  • Impact on the value chain: This includes reporting on how waste policies affect the entire chain, including working with suppliers and customers to reduce waste.
  • Progress reporting: There should be regular reporting on the progress of the waste policy, including KPIs and targets.

How do Milgro's waste figures come about/what is the data process?

Milgro's waste figures are compiled by combining different waste streams:

  1. Procurement information: This contains waste stream data enriched with procurement information.
  2. Market knowledge: industry information of waste treatment methods, legislation and market trends.
  3. Agreements with recipients: Details of agreements with our waste partners on how and where waste is processed.

This data is processed and analyzed to provide a clear and reliable overview of waste streams, which is visualized through our dashboard.

What do you need to do yourself?

For CSRD reporting, especially in section E5, the focus is on the inflow and outflow of waste and other streams. Milgro provides waste management support such as analysis and is a strategic partner. We provide insights and solutions, but ultimately you as an organization ensure that the policy is correct within the broad reporting requirements.

What do our relations think

Multiple relations have very positive experiences with the reports they receive through Milgro, within the framework of the CSRD. They indicated that the reporting saves a tremendous amount of time and is sufficient to fulfill the requirement of the reporting requirements. One relationship specifically indicated that the insights from Milgro helped them get through the CSRD process efficiently.

Does Milgro help only on topic CE (ESRS E5) or also on other topics like climate (E1) and water (E4?)

Milgro currently supports mainly on the Circular Economy theme (ESRS E5), where we are developing further with reporting to also cover other themes such as climate (E1) and water (E4). We are working on mapping Scope 3 emissions and the impact of waste in broader sustainability contexts. This will allow us to translate circular steps into other areas. We already have the ability to do hotspot analysis on various sustainability indicators within the chain.

Are there other tools you can use to clarify the impact and risks of material use?

Sure. Besides hot spot analysis, an LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) is a valuable tool for understanding the impact and risks of material use. An LCA measures the environmental impact of a product at all its life stages, from ground extraction to waste disposal. At Milgro, we use validated LCA data to calculate impact, not only for waste streams, but also for broader environmental themes such as CO2 emissions and water consumption. This helps with reporting under the CSRD and supports organizations' sustainability goals and resource transition.

Driving circularity

Milgro supports companies in steering for circularity through a dashboard with various options. An important indicator is the separation percentage, which shows how much waste is effectively separated for recycling or reuse. The dashboard also provides insight into the R-ladder (reduce, reuse, recycle) and processing methods. It looks at recovery potential and actual recycling performance. This helps companies meet their circular goals and promote sustainability within their processes.
